Hanadama pearl is a newer term that refers to a type of Akoya pearls. It refers to the absolute best in Akoya pearls from each harvest, which represents about 0.1% or less of any given harvest. Pearl jewelry deemed Hanadama will come with an independent Hanadama pearl certificate from their labs in Tokyo, Japan. Retailer selling Hanadama pearls without this independent certificate are probably not actually selling Hanadama pearls.
The literal translation for the word “Hanadama” is “spherical flower”, and therefore they are sometimes referred to as “flower pearls”. Here is an explanation to illustrate the quality of the Hanadama pearl. The AAA Akoya pearl usually represents the top 1.0% of any given harvest and the quality pearl will have approximately 5% of surface blemishes. This means that 95% of the pearl is clean. The Hanadama pearl will have 1% or fewer blemishes on it. Because of the limited supply, Hanadama necklaces are very difficult for retailers to keep in stock. They are simply the very best of the best!
