The south sea pearl industry drew more than one region interested in pearl farming. There are pearl farms in Indonesia and the Philippines where the south sea pearl is being cultivated. These countries and governments also regulate their pearl trade to ensure integrity in their exported jewelry.
The Indonesian south sea oysters usually create a smaller pearl than the larger traditional Australian South sea oyster. However, because their waters are warmer, it usually only takes 18 months to create 2mm of nacre, where it takes Australian farms 24 months typically to form 2mm of nacre. The Philippine south sea pearls are similar to the Indonesian pearls. But, because they are in a warmer tropical climate, they only harvest and nucleate during the wet season, which runs from June through November every year.
