This comparison chart for different types of pearls will help you get an overview of pearls at a glance.  The pearls tend to be less expensive at the top of the list and higher priced as you go down the list.  Sizes range as follows:  Freshwater pearls - up to 11mm; Akoya pearls - up to 9.5mm; Tahitian pearls - up to 15mm; South Sea pearls - up to 16mm.  Occasionally Tahitian and South Sea pearls may be larger than that.  Both Tahitian and South Sea pearls may be sold either as round pearls (shown here) or as Baroque pearls.  The baroque pearls tend to be less expensive and more easily available than perfectly matched round pearls.
