Kokichi Mikimoto (1858-1954) is said to have revolutionized the industry of Pearl Jewelry as we know it today. He had an amazing fascination with the production of the Natural Pearl and felt that “Man” could lend a helping had to help create this marvelous gem.
He was born in Toba, Japan and grew up where pearls were important to the everyday lives of the people. He certainly understood how rare a find it was to come across even one large pearl out of the thousands of oysters that were pearl producers. He understood the economics and realized that since the demand was far greater than the supply women in the world would never be able to afford a pearl. However his theory was to simply help the oyster along the way to produce a quality cultured pearl which was indistinguishable from the Natural Pearl.
